Scaffolding platform for roofing works on a grade II listed building in Haywards Heath

Access for tile replacement, Syresham Gardens, RH16
Scaffold platform for roof access, RH16

Service type: Single lift scaffold for roof access.

Address: Syresham Gardens, Haywards Heath, RH16.

Customer needs:

We were asked to supply a quote to erect a single scaffolding lift around a section of an old Grade II listed convent in Haywards Heath, so our customer could access a lower-level roof. You can check out our roofing scaffolds and temporary roof pages for more similar scaffolding projects in West Sussex.

Difficulties we faced: We were not faced with any significant challenges when erecting or dismantling this structure. However, due to the age of this historical building and because it was grade II listed, our scaffolders needed to take extra care when manoeuvring our materials near the property or placing tubes onto the building. End caps were used and placed on the ends of any transom tubes that were touching or within 25mm of the wall to protect the area. Our scaffolders took additional time to ensure that there was no risk of any damage whatsoever.

What we did: The roof section that required access was at a low level, so the scaffold only needed to be 2.4 metres (8ft) high to reach the roofline. We erected a single lift of scaffolding across this 16-metre section of the building to allow safe access to the roof. The finished working platform was 7 scaffolding boards wide.

Other information

  • We installed a ladder gate which provided safe access on and off the platform.
  • A ladder was also fixed to the structure.
  • Along the entire length of this 16m access platform, we installed double handrails and toe board protection.
  • Sole boards were placed on the ground for the upright standards and brace tubes to rest on.
  • We used a total of 20x galvanised steel tubes as standards (vertical uprights).
  • 8ft tubes were used as braces that were connected to the inside ledgers and outside uprights.
  • This structure also featured a sway brace in every 4th bay of the scaffolding.

Hire period: This structure was hired by our customer for 4 weeks for their roofing works to be fully completed.
