Common questions we are asked about our roofers scaffolds

When we are putting up roofing scaffolds, we create the top lift (working platform) so it sits at gutter level, so when the roofers are stood on the working area, they will be able to have full access to the roof with enough reach from the platform.

There are many different kinds of roofing works that roofers are required to complete and having a secure working platform will always make their job easier and safer. Here are just some examples of roof works that would benefit from a scaffold:

  • Re-roofs.
  • Investigations.
  • Storm damage repairs.
  • Leadwork.
  • Installing roof windows.
  • Repairing and changing tiles.
  • Renew lead to a chimney.
  • Felting a flat roof.
  • Adding a roof to a dormer or loft conversion.
  • Thatching.

In our opinion, it should speed up the roofing work, as the users will be at the correct height on a secure platform that allows free movement to get the job completed quicker.
We will ensure the roofing scaffold is put up in plenty of time ready for the works or repairs to take place.

Any reputable roofer will be very safety conscious and choose the best and most secure way to complete any roofing job. As per the working at height regulations 2005, precautions should be taken to prevent any falls from height and for roofing projects scaffolding is a requirement. A scaffold structure can be built up and over obstacles that may stand in the way of accessing the roof using a ladder, for example we can erect scaffolding over a conservatory, lean to or extension to get you to roof level but ladders can’t. Any minor repairs can be completed using a ladder and a harness but for most jobs a scaffolding is a must.

This depends on the type of roofing project that is taking place. For domestic works the load bearing capacity is around 1.5kn per sqm. This will need to be taken into consideration when removing tiles and placing them on the scaffolds.

Yes, we can install a simple gin wheel onto the roof scaffolding structure which will be included in our quote, or we can quote separately to supply and install electric hoists or winches.

We can install debris netting and also brick guards if required, as this will help prevent any tiles or debris falling off the roof scaffolding.

Yes, we can certainly erect scaffolds up and over pitched roofs. This is very common practice for us, and we will either create a saddle on the roof or we may have to beam over so that the roof does not take the platforms weight, it all depends on what type of access is required.

Yes, we are also able to scaffold over lean-to roofs. We treat these obstacles in a very similar way to a conservatory scaffold, where we will erect the scaffolding around the lean-to and then build up and over using lattice beams to take the weight of the scaffolds.

For jobs with a fall risk over 2 metres, we always install roof-edge protection handrails (triple guardrails and toeboards on flat roofs). We can build a small access tower to the roof line and then add double handrails and toe boards around the perimeters edge, so you are fully protected from falling. However, we can also provide full access scaffolding around the building should this be required.
