Temporary Roof Scaffold Installation, Vale Avenue, Worthing - Cost £9500

We recently completed a custom temporary roof scaffold installation at a residential property on Vale Avenue in Worthing. This project provided full weatherproof coverage for roof repair and maintenance work, allowing the client’s team to operate safely and efficiently despite variable coastal weather conditions. Erected to exact specifications, the structure delivered reliable protection, compliance with UK safety standards, and excellent value for the client.

As specialist scaffolding contractors serving Worthing and the wider Sussex area, we design and install temporary roof scaffolds that weatherproof buildings, prioritise worker safety, structural stability, and minimise site disruption, key factors in successful roofing projects.

The challenge: protecting a large roof area during repairs

The client needed comprehensive overhead protection for an extensive roof area during essential repair work. The property’s pitched roof required a scaffold capable of accommodating significant height variations while providing durable, weather-resistant coverage. Primary requirements included:

  • Complete enclosure to prevent rain ingress and wind exposure, common issues in Worthing’s seaside location.
  • Full adherence to Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidelines and NASC (National Access and Scaffolding Confederation) standards.
  • A practical, cost-effective hire arrangement that supported uninterrupted progress.

Without an effective temporary roof, the project faced risks of water damage, schedule delays, and compromised safety for operatives.

Our solution: custom-designed tin hat

We engineered and erected a robust temporary roof system tailored precisely to the site’s dimensions and roof profile. The design incorporated heavy-duty components for load-bearing capacity, stability, and long-term reliability.

Key specifications and features:

  • Dimensions and coverage: An approximate 12.0 m × 14.0 m × 12.0 m footprint, with a height of 7.0 m at the lowest point (3 lifts) and 8.5 m at the highest point (4 lifts). The working platforms were between 3 and 6 boards deep for safe access and material handling.
  • Beam Structure: 6 rows of 16-metre beam sections, each 450 mm deep, providing exceptional strength and span capability.
  • Stabilisation and security: A 5.0 m long buttress x 2.1 m high, reinforced with 2 × IBC water tanks (total ballast weight 2 tonnes), was installed to counter wind loads and ensure rock-solid stability.
  • Materials and compliance: This tin hat was constructed from certified scaffold tubes, fittings, and sheeting compliant with BS EN 12811-1 and TG20:21. Full edge protection, toe boards, and safe ladder access were integrated throughout.

This configuration created a secure, enclosed workspace ideal for our client, protecting both the structure below and the operatives above.

Implementation: efficient erection and on-site management

Our qualified scaffolders carried out the installation with precision and care, minimising impact on the homeowner and their neighbours. The process included:

  1. Detailed site survey to assess ground conditions, roof geometry, and access restrictions.
  2. Safe delivery and phased assembly, starting with the base and progressing to the beam framework and buttress.
  3. On-site filling and positioning of IBC ballast tanks, followed by load testing and inspection.
  4. Client handover with clear safety instructions, inspection records, and 24/7 support contacts.

The erection was completed incident-free, demonstrating best-practice standards in temporary works.

Results and benefits: cost-effective protection with proven reliability

The scaffold was provided on a 4-week hire basis for £5,500, delivering strong value for the protection and functionality offered. Key project outcomes:

  • Weather-independent progress: The full enclosure enabled consistent work, helping the client avoid costly delays.
  • Zero safety incidents: Achieved through rigorous compliance, competent erection, and ongoing monitoring.
  • Client feedback: Positive comments on the scaffold’s strength, ease of use, and our responsive service throughout the hire period.
  • Sustainable approach: Reusable components, including the water ballasts, reduced environmental impact.
