Scaffold for Solar Panel Installation at Valebridge Road, Burgess Hill

Project Overview

This case study examines the erection of scaffolding at a property in Valebridge Road, Burgess Hill, specifically designed for solar panel installation. Scaffold Design and Dimensions

The scaffold was erected along the side of the bungalow, running parallel to the tiled roof below gutter level to facilitate access for solar panel fitting. It measured 10 linear metres in length, 2.1 metres in height (comprising 1 lift), and 5 boards deep, creating a stable working platform. The structure included guardrails on the outer side for fall protection and was positioned adjacent to the roof edge, allowing direct access to the installation area. Access to the platform was provided via a ladder secured at one end, with a safety gate for controlled entry.

Materials Used

This scaffold was constructed using the following materials:

  • Tubes and Fittings: Galvanised steel poles were installed for the vertical standards, horizontal ledgers, and transoms, providing structural support; they were also used as top and intermediate rails for fall protection. All components were connected with singles, doubles, and swivel couplers.
  • Boards: Wooden scaffold planks were laid across the transoms to form the platform, offering a non-slip surface for the installers.
  • Ladder: A steel ladder was integrated into the structure for access, secured to the main frame with ladder clamps.
  • Ladder gate: An orange mesh safety gate was attached to the ladder access point for safe entry and exit.

Installation and Site Considerations

The scaffold was built in a narrow space, adjacent to a wooden fence and near garden elements, including a wheelbarrow and storage bins. The platform was elevated to align with the gutter level for easier access to the roofline. The single-lift design minimised material use while providing sufficient height for the solar panel work.

Cost and Hire Details

The total cost for the scaffold hire was £500, covering 4 weeks. This included erection, maintenance, and dismantling, making it a cost-effective solution for the short-term solar panel installation project.
