Scaffolding for window repairs, painting and roof works on a shop front in Worthing

Tower for window and roof works in Worthing

Service type: Scaffold for window access, decorating, and roofing works.

Address: West Buildings, Worthing, BN11.

Customer needs:  This project involved installing scaffolding at the front of a three-storey building in Worthing so contractors could safely carry out roofing, window replacement, and decorating work. As part of our scaffolding in Worthing service, we regularly erect access systems for residential and commercial properties across the BN11 area.

Difficulties we faced: This scaffolding was placed on a public pavement, so a licence was required. We applied for this on behalf of the customer. Due to its location, our scaffolders needed to be extra careful whilst erecting and dismantling the structure. We also installed additional safety features.

What we did: A scaffold was erected to this shop’s front elevation measuring approximately 5 metres long (first 2x lifts) by 8 metres long (top 2x lifts) and was around 9 metres high.

Our scaffolders began by putting up a 5-metre-high tower that featured 2 working lifts and was 5 metres wide. They then built up from this tower an 8-metre beam section that was 7 metres high and around 8 metres wide that was required to support the scaffold that was to reach the top gable on the roof. We then added another platform on top of the beam section, roughly 9 metres high and, similar to the lower lift, was 8 metres wide.

Access was also required to the gable end, which was situated on the left side of the roof, so from the fourth lift, we built a 12-metre  beam section that was 6 boards wide and which we built up and over the neighbouring shop roof.

  • All operating platforms were fully boarded.
  • Toe boards were fixed around the edge of each platform.
  • Full ladder access was supplied.
  • Double handrails were fixed on every lift.
  • Yellow ladder gates were installed for fall protection.
  • Hi-visibility foam was fixed around all ground-level standards.
  • Base plates were placed in protective yellow tredda plates.
  • Two 8m beams were used for the 3rd.
  • Debris netting was installed on the top lift to prevent debris from falling to the ground.
  • Sway bracing was fitted to the top 3 lifts of the structure.

Hire period: A 12-week hire period was given, and the scaffolding pavement licence was submitted for the same length of time. Our team frequently installs access scaffolding for roofing and renovation work on multi-storey properties, including a recent roof access scaffold installation in Madeira Avenue that provided safe working platforms for a full re-roofing project
