Splay scaffolding with 2 returns for balcony removal and roof access on a property in Shoreham

Platforms for balconies and roofing works

Service type: Scaffold for balcony replacement and roof access.

Address: West Beach, Shoreham-by-sea, West Sussex, BN43 5LF.

Customer needs:  We were contacted to submit a quotation to provide scaffolding to the front and two small returns on either side of this property in Shoreham so that they could replace the balconies on the front and then access the roof for repair works. For this project, we gave a rental period of 4 weeks.

Difficulties we faced: The front of this building was not completely straight, so our scaffolders erected a splay scaffold in order to fit around the shape of the property. This meant the scaffolding was basically split into two, with a splay section connecting them together. We faced no other issues when putting up or dismantling this framework.

What we did: Our team first erected a 4m by 4m (8m) splay framework approximately 5 metres high with two working lifts. They also installed a single support beam as the inside ledger on the right side of the structure because of the weight of the balconies that were being replaced.

We then erected two return scaffolds on either side of the building measuring approximately 4 metres long and 5 metres high, providing two further working platforms on these elevations.

Our customer also needed access to the roof on the left side of their property, which was higher than the right-hand side, so our team erected an 8ft table lift, with was approximately 7-8 metres high from the ground.

  • All working platforms on the front were 7 scaffolding boards wide.
  • Both return lifts were 5 timber planks in width.
  • The top table lift was also 5 scaffold boards deep.
  • Throughout this structure, we installed double handrails and toeboards.
  • Steel ladder access was provided.
  • Safety ladder gates were also installed.
  • A single 6-metre-long beam was used for the inside ledger.

Hire period: We hired this scaffold for our customer for a standard 4-week hire period. As specialist providers of scaffolding in Shoreham, we regularly handle complex coastal property access challenges like splay setups for balcony replacements and roof works in BN43 areas. You can see more residential scaffolds here, including a re-roofing scaffold on a property in Erringham Road, Shoreham, which provided similar high-level access.
