Haki staircase scaffolds for roof access, Horsham

Client requirements: We were asked to provide a quotation for a 6-flight and 7-flight Haki staircase system to provide safe access for installing a new steel frame roof on a large unit in Horsham. One was a standard Haki scaffold staircase, used to allow workers to access the roof area safely. The second Haki staircase was a pedestrian system for health and safety. Our quotation was accepted with a 2-week hire period agreed upon.

Difficulties we faced: We did not face any significant challenges with each staircase; however, our client was very health and safety conscious, so the second Haki stairs were installed as a precaution should there be an accident whilst users were working on the roof. This was in place if an injured person needed to be stretchered off the roof. The pedestrian system was wider than the standard Haki staircase, so it could facilitate this scenario should it occur.

What we did:  

Haki Staircase 1

• The standard Haki staircase was 12m high and featured 6 flights of stairs.
• No design was required for this structure.
• This Haki stair scaffold had one entrance at ground level and one exit at the very top of the structure.
• The Haki tower measured 3.05m long and 1.655m wide.
• Each flight of stairs had double handrails.
• The stairways were 800mm wide.
• This staircase was erected to comply with SG4.
• The landings and stair treads had a non-slip surface.
• Each flight of stairs had 9 treads from landing to landing.
• Timber toe boards were installed on each landing for safety.

Haki Pedestrian Staircase 2

• The public access Haki staircase we installed was 11m high with 7 flights of stairs. These flights were installed at 1.5m intervals, and there was also a 500mm high 3-step up at the base entrance of this staircase.
• The overall size of this modular system was 4080mm wide and  5810mm long.
• The pedestrian staircase featured slip-resistant solid steel decks instead of mesh grating.
• Although this is generally used for large-scale public events, this staircase system was for emergency use should there have been an accident on the roof.
• The landings measured 1655mm long and 1655mm wide.
• The flights of stairs measured 2500mm long and 1655mm wide.

Hire period: The hire period for both Haki staircase systems was for a total of 2 weeks. 

Alternative access solutions: The pedestrian Haki staircase was selected for its wider design to enable emergency stretcher evacuation; alternatively, our Layher stairs provide similar quick-assembly modular solutions with child-safe guardrails and adaptable widths for health and safety-focused roof or construction access.
