This case study details the successful execution of a scaffolding project to facilitate the installation of a temporary roof cover over a property located on Portland Road, Worthing. The primary objective was to provide a safe and stable working platform whilst protecting the building from environmental elements during the construction works.
The project required a comprehensive scaffolding solution with distinct requirements for both the front and rear elevations of the building.
Front elevation: Scaffolding was erected to a height of approximately 10 metres, comprising 5 lifts. The working platform was constructed with a depth of 5 boards and included a secure ladder gate for controlled site access and safety. For enhanced worker protection, the working platforms were equipped with double handrails and toe boards, ensuring both stability and fall prevention.
Rear elevation: The rear scaffold was erected to a height of approximately 8 metres, consisting of 4 lifts. This section also featured a platform depth of 5 boards, with double handrails and toe boards installed throughout to maintain a safe working environment.
Temporary roof: The temporary roof was installed, spanning approximately 5.0 linear meters in width at the front and rear of the property. The roof framework was supported by 4 rows of 12-metre-long, 450 mm aluminium lattice beams, and a total of 56 corrugated metal roofing sheets were used for the roof covering. Monarflex sheeting was installed to provide additional weather protection around the perimeter of the temporary roof.
Additional safety measures: To enhance site safety and prevent damage, protective foam was fitted around all ground-level vertical scaffold tubes, minimising the risk of injury or accidental impact for workers and passers-by.
To lawfully occupy the public pavement, it was necessary to obtain a specific licence, which was successfully secured. In Worthing, the licence fee is currently £256 for four weeks, with the project scheduled to last 12 weeks.
The Portland Road project featured the installation of a temporary scaffold roof, meticulously engineered to adhere to rigorous safety protocols and statutory compliance standards.
