Service type: Access scaffolding for solar panel installation.
Address: Clarence Drive, East Preston, Littlehampton, BN16.
Customer needs: We were contacted by a solar panel company to quote for a small scaffold to be erected down one side of a bungalow to enable the installers to access the roof to fit the solar panels safely. We priced this job at £300 to supply, erect and dismantle the scaffolding with 2 weeks’ hire.
Difficulties we faced: This was a very simple scaffolding for us to put up; however, the area where we were required to erect the structure was tight as it was in a small alleyway down one side of the property. No pavement licence was needed, and access was reasonably easy despite our team having little room to manoeuvre.
What we did: This scaffolding structure measured approximately 13.5 metres in length and was 2.2m wide; it was only a single lift in height. We were required to place one set of standards along part of the 13.5m stretch onto the neighbour’s walkway as there was a small partition wall in the way, and the scaffold would not have been wide enough to work from. This working platform was erected to gutter height for the installers to reach the roof area easily. The width of the working area was only 3 scaffold boards wide; however, there was enough room for the solar installer to manoeuvre and fix the panels. Our scaffolders installed double handrails and toe boards around the external perimeter of this access platform for fall prevention; ladder access was also provided to one end of the structure. Hire period: Small solar panel installs like this are generally completed within a few days, so we gave our customer a 2-week rental period that was ample enough to complete their works.
