Customer needs: A quotation was requested from a customer who was undertaking a project that required (BS5837) British standard tree protection fencing for the safety of various trees and roots around the perimeter of a school field in Horsham. A tree preservation order was issued, so the protection needed to be installed to allow our customer to begin work on a new build sports centre for the school. They required a total of 140 linear metres of BS5837 tree protection fencing to be installed at this location, with a hire period of 16 weeks. Difficulties we faced: The tree protection was on school grounds in a large field that would have a brand-new sports centre built, so there was already safe site access for our trucks to park up and offload our equipment.

What we did:

  • Our scaffolders began by erecting the framework, which was built using galvanised steel scaffold tubes. This tree protection frame featured upright standard (vertical) tubes placed into the ground at 3-metre intervals and then 3 horizontal (ledger tubes) connected to the upright tube fixed at a height of 0.1m, 0.9m and 1.8m increments from the ground.
  • Rakers (diagonal supports) were then fixed to each upright tube, and these were fixed to shorter 3ft steel tubes secured into the ground. This provided extra support and stability for the vertical tubes and the framework.
  • We then secured the 3.5m long heavy-duty temporary fence panels to the scaffold framework using cable ties. 
  • Rubber fencing feet and standard fencing couplers were used throughout this protective fencing perimeter to connect the panels together and also provide a secure base.
  • Approximately 40 heras fencing panels were used for this structure.

 

Hire period: This 140m of BS5837 tree protection fencing was hired for a total of 16 weeks at The Forest School, safeguarding trees under a TPO during construction of the new sports centre.
