Customer needs: We were contacted to supply an urgent quotation for an access tower to a section of a building in Arundel. This was to assess any damage and fix the bonnet tiles on the roof that had been blown off in high winds. We supplied a price of £550 for a 4-lift tower with a rental period of 1 week and also an additional fee of £192.10 for a council pavement permit.
Difficulties we faced: There were no issues faced with this scaffold, it was a simple access tower on a building in the centre of Arundel. As our client required emergency access due to falling tiles, we were granted the scaffolding pavement licence 2 days after applying because we made West Sussex County Council aware that there was falling debris that could be a safety risk to pedestrians and vehicles, so the council rushed it through.
What we did: We erected a scaffolding tower as quickly and as safely as we could on the left-hand side corner of this 3-storey building so our client could access the bonnet area of the roof where the tiles had blown off in the high winds from Storm Eunice. This tower was approximately 4.0 metres wide by 10 metres high with 4 scaffolding lifts. The first and the very top lift were fully boarded, 6 scaffold boards wide to create a safe working platform for the roofer. The platform at the top of this tower was triple handrailed with toe boards and debris netting installed to the perimeter of the working lift to provide additional fall protection in case any further tiles fell.
A ladder was installed for our client to reach the very top working lift from the first boarded platform, and a ladder gate was also installed on this lower lift. Additional protection was added to the tower, including hi-visibility foam around the ground-level uprights, and the base plates were placed on yellow plastic tredda plates. The high street location and historic nature of the Old Bank House demanded extra care with pedestrian safety and building protection; our Amberley thatched barn scafffold project demonstrates the same attention to detail on another local heritage scaffolding structure, using a full tin hat roof cover with internal birdcage scaffolds and platforms for safe, long-term repairs.
Hire period: This was a quick turnaround job as our client only required the tower for a maximum of 1 week, so we included a 7 day hire period within our price.
