Customer needs: We were contacted by a solar panel company that required handrails and edge protection scaffolding for a large unit in Goodwood so that they could install solar panels on the roof. They needed various handrails and access towers with loading bays around all sides of the unit. We quoted this project at £10,850 and allowed for 3 weeks of hire.
Difficulties: There were no issues whilst erecting these different structures; the site was easy to access, and we had ample room to build the scaffolds. What we did:
Our scaffolders erected 160 linear metres of triple guard rail between 6-10 metres high, depending on the rise of this enormous pitched roof.
Two heavy-duty loading bays were also installed.
Loading bay 1 – Measured 4 metres long by 7.5 metres high: this included 5 scaffold lifts, including the foot tie lift, and the top of the loading bay was 20 boards deep.
Loading bay 2 – Measured 6 metres high with 4 lifts, including a foot tie lift. This loading bay was 11 scaffold boards deep.
We erected two towers to gain access to the roof.
Access Tower 1 – This scaffold was approximately 5 metres wide and 8.0 metres high (4 scaffold lifts), with all lifts fully boarded and 5 scaffolding boards deep.
Access Tower 2 – This tower measured around 4 metres wide by 6 metres high (3 lifts) and was also 5 boards deep.
Multiple support towers were built to shore up and brace the handrail from the floor. These included 5 x 2.4 metre wide towers that were between 1 and 2.1 metres deep and 4 metres high. There was also a single 5-metre tower that was 1.2 metres deep and 4 metres high. Finally, the last support tower was an 8-metre long tower that was 2.4 metres wide and 6 metres high.
Then, our team erected an independent scaffold on the side of the building that measured approximately 26 metres wide by 5m high (3 lifts) and was 1.2 metres deep.
Hire period: This customer only required the handrails and scaffolds for a maximum of 3 weeks, which we included in the price.
