Description
We’ve supplied scaffolding contractors across the UK for years and know how important a reliable joint is when you’re working at height. These couplers give you a clean, load-bearing connection without the need for spigots or welding. They’re quick to fit, easy to inspect, and built to last through multiple projects. Whether you’re extending a tower, lengthening a runway or simply replacing a damaged fitting, our sleeve couplers get the job done safely and cost-effectively.

Typical applications
- Vertical extension of standards to reach greater heights.
- Horizontal lengthening of ledgers and transoms.
- Joining guardrail tubes for continuous edge protection.
- Diagonal bracing where straight-line joints are required.
- Temporary structures, staging, access towers and maintenance platforms.
Once extended with sleeve couplers, connect your longer ledgers or standards securely to the rest of the structure using our double couplers for reliable 90° load-bearing joints at every intersection.
Safety & compliance
Every sleeve coupler we stock meets BS EN 74 Class B requirements, the British and European standard for scaffold couplers. When fitted correctly, with equal tube overlap on both sides and nuts tightened to the manufacturer’s recommended torque, they provide excellent resistance to slip and pull-out. Always use a 21 mm scaffold spanner (never an adjustable one) and never over-tighten to avoid damaging the tube. Regular visual checks for deformation or worn threads keep your scaffold safe throughout its life.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ’s)
What exactly does a sleeve coupler do?
It slides over the ends of two 48.3 mm scaffold tubes and locks them together in a straight line, allowing you to extend any part of the scaffold safely.
Can I use sleeve couplers on horizontal tubes?
Yes, they work equally well on ledgers, guardrails and diagonal braces.
How is a sleeve coupler different from a joint pin?
A sleeve coupler is an external fitting that wraps around the tubes; a joint pin is an internal spigot that sits inside the tubes. Sleeve couplers are generally preferred for heavier-duty or longer extensions.
What size spanner do I need?
A standard 21 mm (7/16″) scaffold spanner fits the locking nuts perfectly.
Are they suitable for outdoor use?
Yes. The zinc plating (or galvanised finish) gives good protection against rust, especially when stored off the ground between jobs.
How much weight can one sleeve coupler support?
When installed to EN 74 Class B standards, they are fully load-bearing for normal scaffolding duties (workers, materials and wind loads).
