Customer needs: We were contacted and asked to provide a quotation for a temporary roof scaffold over a 2-storey property in Crawley, so the client could complete their loft conversion without the weather delaying the build or water entering open areas. We quoted this client for a full tin hat covering with a 4–5-month rental period. Difficulties we faced: We did not have any particular issues with this temporary roof. The structure itself was straight forward to put up with no complications. Access was good although the road was small, but we still managed to fit our lorry down the cul-de-sac.
What we did: This temporary roof was required to cover the entire top level of a 2-storey detached house, to protect the property from the weather whilst the loft conversion was being completed. The sides of the temporary roof were approx. 30ft long and the front and back of the scaffolding were 40ft in length. This structure had 5 scaffold lifts to the front of the building and 4 lifts at the back and this was to create a slant to the roof so that when it rained the water would run off one side. Only one of the lifts needed to be boarded around the perimeter of the house, so that the builders would be able to complete the loft conversion works. This five-board wide platform was fitted with double handrails and toe boards.
The roof was covered with corrugated metal roofing sheets, fixed to tubes and aluminium scaffold lattice beams using roof couplers shaped to match the corrugation of the iron sheets, ensuring a secure fit. Once the scaffolding was erected, we then added Monarflex sheeting to all sides of the temporary tin hat to ensure the structure was fully water-tight and weatherproof.
Hire period: We provided our client with a hire period of four to five months, because they were unable to give a specific completion date. So just to be sure we were flexible with our hire period.
