Customer needs: We were asked to quote for a temporary roof covering that spanned the entire property, which was a large detached 2 storey house as the roof had been badly damaged after a storm. So, this customer required a full tin hat scaffolding whilst the repair works took place. We quoted our customer for an 8-week rental period which included full supply of all scaffolding equipment plus the erection and dismantling of the structure.
Difficulties we faced: No problems or difficulties arose when erecting the canopy over the house as the access was perfect around all 4 sides.
What we did: To ensure we gave our customer plenty of working room and space to complete the roofing works we built a 12m high temporary roof cover which had a total length of 48m around the entire perimeter of the building. The scaffolding was built 4 lifts high with a flyer lift at one end and 4 lifts at the other end with only the 2nd platform being fully boarded a total 5 scaffold boards wide and safety guard rails and toe boards were also installed. We used CI sheeting (corrugated iron sheets) to create the covering which sat on 7 rows of supporting beam work that was connected to the top of the scaffolding framework. The whole external perimeter from the first floor upwards was wrapped in Monarflex sheeting to ensure the roof area was completely protected from the elements. On the front of this property, we installed extra bracing and also rakers which were attached to a 2-lift buttress for additional support.
On the rear of the house, to create the slanted roof, we only erected 4 lifts of scaffold, whilst on the front we put up 4 lifts and a ‘flyer lift’, so that the scaffolding to the rear was lower than the scaffold at the front, which meant that if it rained, the water would slide off the roof. Ladder access was provided from the ground to the 2nd lift, and we also installed a gin rope and wheel as per our customer’s request. The rear of the property had a flat-roof extension spanning the entire length of the back, so we were required to erect the scaffold up and over it. Hire period: An 8 week hire period was given to our customer to ensure there was enough time for them to carry out the repair works on the roof.
