Scaffold stairs and edge protection on a tank, Lidsey Landfill Site, Shripney

Service type: Staircase scaffold and edge protection handrails.

Address: Lidsey Landfill, Lidsey Road, Bognor Regis, PO22 9PL.

Customer access needs: We were contacted and asked to supply, erect, and dismantle a traditional steel tube-and-fittings scaffold staircase and handrail edge protection to ensure safe access around a tank at a landfill site in Lidsey, Bognor Regis.

Difficulties we faced: Our scaffolders needed to be mindful not to damage equipment and machinery while building and dismantling the scaffold stairs and edge protection handrails. Access was not a problem.

What we did:

Staircase – Our scaffolders erected a 2.8 metre-high tube and fitting staircase to gain access to the top area of the tank. The first flight of stairs was approximately 1 metre high and featured 4 steps using 1220mm steel treads. The landing was 1.2 metres wide, 5 scaffold boards deep, and double handrails and toe boards were installed on this flight. The second flight of stairs was around 1.8 metres high and featured 7 steps again using 1220mm steel stair treads. The landing for this flight of stairs was 1.2 metres and also 5 scaffold boards deep. This section of stairs also featured double handrails and toe boards on the landings.

Edge protection – Handrail tubes were installed around the tank’s perimeter and measured approximately 13 linear metres. We also fitted a third handrail at approximately 3 metres high, making this edge protection a triple guardrail. This gave the customer complete fall protection safety as they manoeuvred around the tank. This approach to providing complete fall protection mirrors our work on other commercial scaffolds, such as this scaffolding with loading bays at Redvins Barn, Goodwood, where we installed extensive triple handrails around structures for safe working at height.

Hire period: This staircase scaffold and edge protection handrails had a hire period of 4 weeks, as originally quoted.
