Customer needs: This customer needed a scaffolding temporary roof covering over an old church building, in Houghton. This property was being renovated and dormers were going to be installed into the roof. The cost of this temporary roof was £3800 with a twelve week hire period included. This temporary tin roof was smaller in comparison to some of the large tin hats we have erected in the past and this is why the price was lower than usual for the supply, erect and dismantling of this structure.
Difficulties we faced: We were required to provide extra safety measures to this scaffold because this property is located at the bottom of Houghton hill and wind speeds can be very high. So, for additional safety we included apollo ties and a buttress with rakers to ensure it was completely secure. Apart from this there were no other issues with this scaffold and access was fine.
What we did: This tin hat was erected either side of the apex roof to allow for the installation of the dormers. To achieve this, we erected two 21-foot towers on either side of the building and then built the roof covering over this. The roof height was six metres at one end and seven metres at the other, to allow for a slight tilt so any rainwater could flow down the roof and off the sides. We installed 450mm-thick aluminium lattice beams approximately 10 metres in length, and on top of these we added corrugated metal sheets for the roof. Around the full perimeter of the framework, we attached Monarflex sheeting to ensure the scaffolding was fully weatherproof.
Due to the high winds this particular location gets (being based at the bottom of a hill) we had to take extra safety measures to ensure this temporary roof was completely secure. To do this we used 16 apollo ties to secure the scaffold to the building and we also included a foot tie that was tied into both of the towers. A 4.0m high by 2.4m wide heavy duty raker buttress was erected on the side of the building that was more susceptible to being hit by the winds.
On the apex side of this building, we also installed a small single fully boarded lift with handrails and toe boards, so that brickwork for a small extension could continue.
Hire period: This temporary roof scaffold was on hire for 12 weeks.
